Amazon Sells March of Giants to Assassin's Creed Maker Ubisoft

By Mauro Orru

Amazon.com agreed to sell the rights to multiplayer online battle-arena game "March of Giants" to Ubisoft Entertainment, handing it a title in one of the most promising genres in gaming.

The French videogame maker said the Montreal-based team behind "March of Giants" would join Ubisoft under the deal with Amazon, which will provide marketing support for the game on live-streaming platform Twitch. The companies didn't disclose the terms of the deal.

Amazon Game Studios hasn't yet released "March of Giants" to the public at large, but the team has tested the game with a restricted group of players and expects to announce a major update next year to introduce new giants and expanded competition modes.

Ubisoft, which is seeking to turn its business around after months of production delays, glitches and cancellations with its own games, said "March of Giants" drew strong player interest since its reveal and is betting it can leverage the title to attract new audiences and grow it into a successful live competitive game.

"March of Giants has a real opportunity to bring something fresh and dynamic to players, and to help Ubisoft compete in one of gaming's biggest arenas," Ubisoft Chief Executive Yves Guillemot said in a statement. The group said the multiplayer online battle-arena category represents hundreds of millions of active players and is a significant opportunity for games that can build a loyal following.

The team behind "March of Giants," including Creative Director Xavier Marquis and Senior Production Leader Alexandre Parizeau, will join Ubisoft, where they both have worked previously. The company said Marquis is the original creative director of "Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege," while Parizeau previously served as managing director of Ubisoft Toronto, overseeing the development of big-budget games.

Ubisoft said the deal is expected to close by Dec. 16.
