Venture Global Inks 20-Year LNG Supply Agreement With Tokyo Gas
By Jason Chau
U.S. gas producer Venture Global has signed an agreement with Tokyo Gas to supply the Japanese energy giant with liquefied natural gas for 20 years.
Under the agreement, Tokyo Gas will procure 1 million metric tons of LNG a year from Venture Global starting in 2030, according to a press release late Tuesday.
The deal marks Venture Global's fourth long-term contract with a Japanese company.
"This agreement will contribute significantly to the US-Japan balance of trade over the duration of the SPA, providing Japan with affordable, reliable American LNG," said Venture Global Chief Executive Mike Sabel.
Venture Global said it has signed a series of LNG supply agreements totaling 7.75 million tons this year with entities in countries including Spain, Greece and Japan, as the U.S. cements its position as the world's largest LNG exporter amid the Trump administration's push to expand fossil fuel production.
The supply agreement comes amid growing pressure from the Trump administration on Japan and other U.S. allies to boost purchases of energy from the U.S.
Japan in July pledged to invest $550 billion in U.S. industries as part of a trade deal to lower U.S. tariffs on Japanese goods.
Tokyo Gas, Japan's largest city gas provider and the primary supplier in the Tokyo metropolitan area, said in a separate statement that the deal will diversify its LNG procurement sources and expand LNG trading.
Tokyo Gas signed a letter of intent in October to purchase LNG from the proposed $44 billion Glenfarne LNG project in Alaska.
Tokyo Gas shares rose over 4% in morning trade on Wednesday following the announcement.
