Japan PM Takaichi: Trump Confirmed Close Ties, Affirmed Friendship in Call

TOKYO---Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said she spoke with President Trump, who affirmed the close ties between Japan and the U.S. amid a serious diplomatic spat between Tokyo and Beijing.

Takaichi said she and Trump spoke at his request by phone and exchanged views on the U.S.-Japan alliance, the situation in Ukraine and Trump's Monday phone call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

"I believe that, amidst the current international situation, we were able to confirm the close coordination between Japan and the U.S., following President Trump's recent visit to Japan. President Trump told me that I am an extremely close friend and that I should feel free to call him anytime."
