Alibaba's Qwen App Marks 10 Million Downloads in First Week
By Sherry Qin
Alibaba's Qwen, an AI app aiming to compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT, hit 10 million downloads within one week of its public beta launch, emerging as a popular consumer AI tool in China.
The Chinese e-commerce giant disclosed the figure in a post on its official WeChat account on Monday. The app is a free AI assistant powered by Alibaba's self-developed model and rebranded from its previous Tongyi app.
AI tools have become increasingly popular with consumers. In 2023, OpenAI's ChatGPT reached 100 million users in two months, faster than any previous consumer app. When the DeepSeek app launched in January, it climbed to the top of the U.S. iPhone download rankings within a week.
Analysts said the Qwen app underscores Alibaba's ambition to capture the consumer AI market.
Alibaba, whose AI strategy has long focused on cloud computing, is expected to rapidly accumulate users and gain a leading position in the AI assistant market as it integrates the app with other services in its ecosystem, Orient Securities said in a note.
In an interview with local media LatePost last week, the Qwen App team said that they don't believe they are late to the consumer market, noting there is still no single AI app with more than 100 million daily active users in China.
As the app aims to rival ChatGPT one day, the team said Qwen is being offered for free and that its focus is on improving the product, with no plans for monetization at the moment.
Alibaba's Hong Kong-listed shares closed 4.7% higher as Chinese tech stocks broadly rebounded broadly from Friday's losses.
