Hyundai, Kia Issue Recall Due to Potential Fire Risk Linked to Check Valves
By Connor Hart
Hyundai and Kia are recalling certain vehicles whose check valves may be damaged, allowing air to enter the fuel tank.
If air enters the fuel tank it can expand and contact hot exhaust components, melting the fuel tank and increasing the risk of a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
More than 85,000 Hyundai vehicles could be affected, including Sonata vehicles manufactured between 2020 and 2023. And more than a quarter-million Kia vehicles could be affected, including K5 vehicles manufactured between 2021 and 2024, the NHTSA said.
Dealers will inspect and replace damaged check valves, and fuel tanks will be inspected for damage and released as necessary, the regulator said.
