Wells Fargo Names Executive to Lead AI Initiatives

By Katherine Hamilton

Wells Fargo has appointed one of its executives to lead the company's artificial-intelligence operations.

Saul Van Beurden, who has been serving as chief executive of consumer and small-business banking, will oversee AI at the bank, it said Thursday.

Wells Fargo has been using AI for robotic process automation and machine learning, and has trained more than 90,000 employees in using AI. It has deployed AI tools to 180,000 desktops and is starting to establish more use cases, Chief Executive Charlie Scharf said.

Van Beurden will work with business leaders and will be accountable to Scharf to show consistent and meaningful progress of AI across the company, the chief executive said.

Kleber Santos, the bank's chief executive of consumer lending, will take on expanded responsibilities to serve as co-chief executive of consumer and small-business banking alongside Van Beurden.
