EU Court Dismisses Amazon's Legal Challenge Over Stricter Online Rules — Update

By Edith Hancock

A top European Union court dismissed Amazon's legal challenge against its online marketplace being classed as a service that needs to obey stricter rules for large digital platforms.

The EU's General Court said Wednesday that the European Commission--the bloc's executive arm--was justified in designating Amazon Store, which includes the tech company's Amazon.com marketplace, as a "very large online platform" under the Digital Services Act.

The designation applies to entities with more than 45 million users in the EU and obliges them to ensure transparency in advertising and content-moderation decisions and to safeguard against illegal content online.

A spokesperson for the company said it was disappointed by the ruling and would appeal, adding that the VLOP status officials can give to tech giants is designed to address systemic issues in the digital economy linked to advertising revenue from distributing information.

"The Amazon Store, as an online marketplace, does not pose any such systemic risks; it only sells goods, and it doesn't disseminate or amplify information, views or opinions," the spokesperson said.
