Consumer Cos Down Ahead of Key Earnings — Consumer Roundup
Consumer companies fell ahead of key earnings in the sector.
Home Depot fell ahead of the home-improvement chain's earnings. Meanwhile, Walmart rose ahead of its earnings later in the week.
"At times like this when you don't have as much data as one would normally be able to access, there's greater scrutiny on the numbers out of retailers," said J.D. Joyce, president of Houston financial advisory Joyce Wealth Management. "Knowing the mood of the consumer is of the utmost importance...I believe there'll be a lot of pencil sharpening by analysts and portfolio managers around the country trying to ascertain if there's some sort of direction [revealed by the reports.]"
The strategist said recent divergence between weak sentiment surveys and relatively strong spending growth could reflect increased spending from individuals who own stocks and other financial assets.
