SoftBank Group shares fell sharply following its quarterly results and overnight declines in U.S. tech stocks.

SoftBank's shares were recently 4.5% lower at 21,670 yen on Wednesday in Tokyo after falling as much as 10% earlier.

U.S. tech stocks fell on Tuesday. U.K. chip-designer Arm Holdings, which is a unit of SoftBank, lost 3.3% and Nvidia fell 3.0% on the Nasdaq.

The Japanese technology investment company said after Tuesday's market close that it sold its entire stake in Nvidia for $5.8 billion last month to fund investments in OpenAI.

SoftBank Group's net profit more than doubled to 2.502 trillion yen, equivalent to $16.23 billion, for the three months ended September, driven by gains in its investment in the ChatGPT maker.

SoftBank has invested about $12.2 billion in OpenAI so far and plans to invest an additional $22.5 billion in December, to bring the total sum to $34.7 billion. SoftBank is set to hold an 11% stake in the ChatGPT maker following the planned investment in December.
