Canada GDP Falls 0.3% August, a Fourth Contraction in Last Five Months
By Robb M. Stewart
OTTAWA--The Canadian economy contracted in August for the four month in the last five as weakness in good producing industries persisted and a strike by flight attendants weighed on air transportation.
Gross domestic product, a broad measure of goods and services produced across the economy, shrank 0.3% from the month before to 2.287 trillion Canadian dollars, the equivalent of $1.635 trillion, Statistics Canada said Friday.
Economists were expecting GDP to have been flat, in line with the data agency's earlier flash estimate for essentially no change. It follows upwardly revised growth of 0.3% in industry-level activity in July, the first expansion the economy saw in four months.
On a one-year basis, GDP rose 0.7%.
The data agency said that advance information indicates GDP edged up 0.1% month-over-month in September. Based on the estimate, industry-level GDP expanded 0.4% on an annualized basis in the third quarter of the year after contracting 0.7% on the same basis the quarter before.
