Societe Generale Net Profit Rose in Third Quarter

By Elena Vardon and Tracy Qu

Societe Generale's third-quarter net profit rose as the bank continued to benefit from a rebound in its domestic retail-banking operations.

The French lender on Thursday reported net profit of 1.52 billion euros, equivalent to $1.76 billion, for the three-month period, up 11% compared from a year earlier.

Net banking income--its top-line metric--fell 3% to 6.65 billion euros, it said. Excluding asset disposals, the metric rose 3% year-on-year, driven by a 4.7% increase in net interest income under same conditions.

Net Banking income at its French retail, private banking and insurance unit rose 0.9% year-on-year.

Net banking income at its global banking-and-investor solutions segment rose 1.6% year-on-year, while revenue from the mobility and international retail banking operations fell 6.2% year-on-year during the quarter.

Analysts had expected Societe Generale to post a net profit of 1.305 billion euros on revenue of 6.41 billion euros, according to consensus estimates compiled by Visible Alpha.

For 2025, the bank expects revenue growth of more than 3%. In July, it upgraded its forecast for return on tangible equity--a key profitability metric--to around 9%, up from 6.9% in 2024, and set a target for a cost-to-income ratio--an efficiency measure--below 65%.
