Wal-Mart de Mexico Net Profit Falls in 3Q

MEXICO CITY--Retailer Wal-Mart de Mexico posted lower net profit in the third quarter on a one-off item, while sales and operating profit rose from a year earlier.
Walmex, as the unit of Bentonville, Ark.-based Walmart is known, reported profit of 11.75 billion Mexican pesos ($638 million) or MXN0.678 a share for the July-September quarter, down 9.2% from MXN12.93 billion a year earlier. The net result was negatively affected by a nonrecurring item in the quarter, Walmex said without giving details.
Revenue rose 4.9% to MXN241.52 billion. Same-store sales in Mexico grew 3.9%, with a 4.5% increase in average ticket and a 0.6% decline in store traffic. In Central America same-store sales rose 0.6%, with a 1.2% higher average ticket partially offset by a 0.6% decline in customer traffic.
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization rose 3.3% to MXN25.27 billion, and operating profit rose 1.6% to MXN19.02 billion.
At the end of September, Walmex operated 3,214 stores in Mexico and 936 in Central America.
