Volkswagen Says It Has Enough Chips For Production Next Week, But Disruption Can't Be Ruled Out
By Dominic Chopping
Volkswagen has enough chips to continue manufacturing through next week, but continued to caution that short-term impacts to its group production network can't be ruled out, a spokesperson said Friday.
Global automakers are scrambling to secure supplies of chips after the Dutch government last month seized control of semiconductor manufacturer Nexperia from its Chinese owner Wingtech Technology, citing risks to economic security.
China retaliated by halting exports of certain Nexperia products manufactured in China, prompting carmakers to start searching for alternative products that are needed to run things such as electronic control units.
Volkswagen earlier this week said that production wasn't affected, but that short-term effects on production couldn't be ruled out.
In an update Friday, a spokesperson said the supply shortage is having no impact on production at the vehicle manufacturing plants of the Volkswagen brand in Germany for the time being.
At all other German production sites that manufacture cars under the other brands within the group, operations for the coming week are also secured as things stand Friday. As well as its namesake brand, Volkswagen also manufactures Audi and Porsche cars in Germany, among others.
"In view of the dynamic situation, however, short-term impacts on the production network of the Volkswagen Group cannot generally be ruled out," the spokesperson said.
Vehicle production at its Wolfsburg, Emden, Zwickau, Osnabruck, and Dresden sites is secured for the coming week, up to and including next Thursday. Production will be suspended next Friday due to public holidays.
Nexperia isn't a direct supplier to the group, although some Nexperia parts are used in vehicle components supplied by the carmaker's vendors.
Volkswagen is looking at alternative sourcing options to limit the possible effects on its supply chain and is also in close contact with potential suppliers, the spokesperson added.
