Uber, WeRide Launch Robotaxi Service in Saudi Arabia

By Connor Hart

Uber Technologies and WeRide have partnered to launch robotaxi rides in Riyadh, marking the first time autonomous vehicles have been publicly available on Uber's platform in Saudi Arabia.

Each vehicle includes a safety operator for now, a measure the companies said Friday will help ensure reliability and safety for riders and pedestrians. They plan to move to fully driverless operations in the future, though no timeline was given.

The launch follows Uber's collaboration with Saudi Arabia's Transport General Authority and is part of the country's push to expand autonomous mobility. The service will initially operate between Roshn Front and Princess Noura University, two major destinations in the capital.

The ride-hailing company has been working with WeRide and regional authorities to expand access to autonomous vehicles across the Middle East.

It previously began offering WeRide robotaxi rides in Abu Dhabi late last year.
