Birkin Bag Maker Hermes's Sales Accelerate as Hopes of Luxury Rebound Mount

By Andrea Figueras

Sales at French luxury-fashion house Hermes continued to grow, reflecting a resilient appetite for the highest end of luxury goods even as shoppers tighten their purse strings elsewhere.

The maker of Birkin bags on Wednesday booked revenue of 3.88 billion euros ($4.50 billion) for the third quarter, 9.6% higher than the same period a year earlier at constant exchange rates and an acceleration from the 9% rise logged in the second quarter.

Analysts polled by Visible Alpha had anticipated quarterly revenue of 3.90 billion euros.

The results follow Louis Vuitton owner LVMH last week reporting an improvement in sales trends, prompting hopes of a luxury sector rebound after a protracted downturn in demand for high-end fashion and accessories.

Hermes reiterated its target of revenue growth at constant exchange rates in the medium term, but acknowledged that the current global environment is marked by economic, geopolitical and monetary uncertainties.
