Amer Sports, Tecnica Group Locations Searched on EU Antitrust Concerns

By Edith Hancock

European Union officials searched Amer Sports and Tecnica Group locations over concerns of possible anticompetitive behavior in the ski-equipment sector, the companies said Tuesday.

The European Commission--the EU's executive arm tasked with screening global corporations' business practices for antitrust concerns--said Monday it had carried out unannounced inspections at the facilities of several companies involved in the ski-equipment business. The watchdog said it has concerns the companies may have breached EU law linked to cartels and restrictive business practices.

Amer Sports, which sells upscale labels such as Arc'teryx, Salomon and Wilson, said on Tuesday that its Austrian ski brand Atomic is subject to an investigation, adding that the company is fully cooperating with the authorities.

Tecnica Group, the privately-held Italian sports-equipment manufacturer of Moon Boot footwear and Rollerblade inline rollerskates, also confirmed Tuesday that its production facility in Mittersill, Austria, was visited as part of a review into compliance with EU competition law.

"The company, confident that it has always operated in full accordance with applicable laws, immediately offered its full cooperation to the officials involved, providing all requested information and documentation, and reaffirming its utmost trust in the work of the competent authorities," a spokesperson said.

Unannounced inspections are an early stage in the EU's antitrust-probe process, but they can lead to formal investigations and even fines if the watchdog believes the companies have violated the bloc's competition rules.
