Merck Begins Work on $3 Billion Virginia Facility

By Nicholas G. Miller

Merck began construction on a previously announced $3 billion manufacturing facility in Elkton, Va., as the pharmaceutical industry, under pressure from the Trump administration, continues to invest in U.S. production.

The 400,000-square foot facility is part of the $6 billion of investments in U.S. manufacturing that Merck has promised this year.

Several pharmaceutical companies have said they would make expensive investments in domestic production amid pressure from the Trump administration. President Trump said last month he would impose a 100% tariff on imported pharmaceuticals, but that companies building a manufacturing plant in the U.S. would be exempt.

The White House recently delayed the tariffs after previously saying they would take effect on Oct. 1.
