Seizure of Chinese-Owned Chip Maker Threatens European Vehicle Production, Industry Group Says
By Mauro Orru
The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association said the Dutch government's seizure of a Netherlands-based semiconductor company from its Chinese owner could disrupt the supply of critical semiconductors needed for vehicle production.
The Dutch government recently seized control of Nexperia from China's Wingtech Technology, citing risks to economic security. A court also suspended Nexperia's chief executive, Zhang Xuezheng, from his duties. Nexperia makes basic transistors and chips used in products such as consumer electronics and cars.
ACEA said Thursday that Nexperia is an important, high-volume supplier of chips that are used in the electronic control units of vehicle electrical systems. While automakers have sought to diversify supply chains in recent years, an interruption of Nexperia chips supplies threatens to disrupt vehicle production in Europe, it said.
"ACEA is deeply concerned by potential significant disruption to European vehicle manufacturing if the interruption of Nexperia chips supplies cannot be immediately resolved," the trade body said in a statement.
