Energy Up Alongside Oil Futures — Energy Roundup
Shares of energy companies rose alongside oil futures as fears of an escalation in U.S.-China trade tensions subsided.
Oil futures rose 1% to $59.49 a barrel, but gains were limited by a sense that trade between the two nations is likely to be "erratic" until a formal deal is reached, according to analysts at BOK Financial.
"I'm not seeing anything that suggests there's an agreement of any sort at this point," said J.D. Joyce, president of Houston financial advisory Joyce Wealth Management. "One tweet [from President Trump] that says 'everything's going to be OK'? It's sort of surprising the market would move that much on that one line."
In the absence of economic data during the government shutdown, markets are more susceptible to wild swings based on little more than sentiment on social media, Joyce said.
