Nubank Applies for U.S. National Bank Charter
By Kelly Cloonan
Nubank said it has applied for a national bank charter with the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
The Brazil-based digital financial services platform said Tuesday a U.S. national bank charter would support its ability to scale in the U.S. to eventually offer deposit accounts, credit cards, lending and digital asset custody.
The company said the move aligns with its strategy to explore future international opportunities by evolving its regional platform into a global model.
The board of Nubank's U.S. business will be chaired by Roberto Campos Neto, former president of the central bank of Brazil. It will also include Nubank's former president and chief operating officer Youssef Lahrech as well as Brian Brooks, former acting comptroller of the currency, among others.
Nubank is headquartered in São Paulo and currently has operations in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. Its subsidiary Nu Mexico received authorization in Mexico to become a bank from the Comisión Nacional Bancaria y de Valores in April 2025, and awaits its final operational approval.
