South Korea to Offer Around-the-Clock Forex Trading
By Kwanwoo Jun
South Korea plans to operate its currency market around the clock, giving foreign financial institutions and investors better access to its money market.
The Finance Ministry said Friday that it will announce a road map within this year to detail the plan to allow won trading on a 24-hour basis. It will also outline other measures to improve financial systems, aimed at getting the country upgraded to a developed-market status by MSCI.
Limited foreign-exchange trading in South Korea has long been a stumbling block to the country's push for a market upgrade by MSCI.
The ministry said in a statement that the road map will also outline a plan to establish an offshore settlement system to address inconveniences faced by foreigners trading won.
The ministry didn't specify a timeline for implementing the new measures, which Seoul officials say could take effect sometime next year.
In 2024, South Korea extended its forex trading hours in a continued push to advance its market.
The country's forex market currently operates from 9 a.m. through 2 a.m. local time on weekdays, more than doubling its daily trading hours previously.
