KBC Group Weighs Ethias NV Acquisition
By Billy Gray
KBC Group said it was weighing an acquisition of state-supported Belgian insurance company Ethias NV, but currently had no other merger plans under review.
The Brussels-based lender said Monday that it continued to monitor the market for financially sound growth opportunities, but clarified that Ethias is the only potential acquisition on the table.
The statement followed a report from Bloomberg that KBC was considering an acquisition of ABN Amro, citing people with knowledge of the matter.
The Dutch government is in the process of trimming its stake in ABN Amro to 20% from 30.5%. It bailed the company out during the financial crisis.
