South Korea's Celltrion Plans to Invest $1 Billion to Acquire, Expand U.S. Facility

South Korean biopharmaceutical company Celltrion plans to invest around $1 billion to acquire and expand a U.S. biologics facility in a bid to reduce U.S. tariff risks.

Celltrion said Tuesday that it plans to acquire the U.S. facility from Eli Lilly for 460 billion won, equivalent to $330.7 million. Including initial operating costs, it would spend 700 billion won in total.

Celltrion said it plans to invest an additional 700 billion won or more to expand the facility in Branchburg, N.J.

Under the agreement, Celltrion will complete the purchase from Eli Lilly by the end of the year.

Celltrion said the planned investment largely aims to remove U.S. tariff risks under the Trump administration.

"Celltrion is expected to remain fully protected from all potential future tariff risks," the company said in a statement.

Celltrion Group Chairman Seo Jung-jin said recently that in response to the tougher U.S. tariff policy, the company would acquire a manufacturing facility and expand contract manufacturing organization work in the U.S.
