Centrica, X-Energy to Build Modular Nuclear Reactors in North of England

By Adam Whittaker

Centrica and U.S.-based energy firm X-Energy plan to build 12 advanced modular nuclear reactors in the north of England.

The announcement came ahead of a state visit by President Trump to the U.K., and forms part of an agreement expected to be signed between the two countries later this week which will support cooperation and the building of nuclear power stations.

The U.K. government said Monday that the investment in Hartlepool could generate up to 1.5 million homes, while creating up to 2,500 jobs.

The companies also plan on developing a wider U.K. program to deliver 6 gigawatts of nuclear power, the U.K. government said.

The overall program could deliver at least 40 billion pounds ($54.24 billion) of economic value, the government added.

Centrica's investment follows its 1.3 billion-pound involvement in the 38 billion-pound Sizewell C nuclear power plant in southeast England which was announced in July.
