InterDigital Awarded Injunction Against Disney

A Brazilian court has granted InterDigital a preliminary injunction against Disney, the mobile, video and artificial-intelligence technology development company said Thursday.
The ruling comes after InterDigital initiated litigation earlier this year in the U.S., Brazil and Germany, alleging that Disney infringed its intellectual property.
The 7th Corporate Court in Rio de Janeiro ordered Disney to stop infringing two InterDigital patents covering AVC and HEVC video-coding technology, according to the company.
An independent expert report commissioned by the court supported InterDigital's claim that Disney violated both patents, the company said.
InterDigital Chief Legal Officer Josh Schmidt said Disney has relied on the company's technology to build its streaming business.
"This decision is an important step in ensuring that we receive fair value from Disney's ongoing use of our innovation, and I welcome the court's support of balanced IP rights and innovation more broadly," he said.
Disney didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
