Elliott Confirms Stake in Kansai Electric Power

By Kelly Cloonan

Elliott Management confirmed it has taken a stake in Kansai Electric Power, making it one of the Japan-based utility company's largest shareholders.

The activist investor said Wednesday it believes in Kansai Electric's potential as it continues to build on its position as Japan's leading producer of low-cost and low-carbon electricity.

Kansai Electric can improve its funding flexibility for future growth and bolster its appeal as a long-term investment, by unlocking capital from its non-core assets and boosting its profitability, Elliott said.

"We look forward to continuing to work constructively with Kansai Electric's management team and other key stakeholders to strengthen the company's core business," Elliott said.

The disclosure confirms an earlier report from Dow Jones Newswires. The news was first reported by the Financial Times.

Elliott did not disclose the size of its stake.
