Anglo American Looks to Sell Remaining Stake in Valterra
By Anthony O. Goriainoff
Anglo American said it plans to sell its remaining stake in Valterra Platinum, seeking to cash in on a stock rally at the platinum producer following its spinoff from the U.K. mining giant.
London-listed Anglo American said Wednesday that it plans to offload the 19.9% stake in Valterra it kept when the demerger was completed at the end of May. The offer price and the number of shares will be determined at the end of the bookbuilding process and will be announced at a later date, Anglo American said.
Based on Valterra's closing share price on Wednesday, the stake would be valued at about 48.25 billion South African rand ($2.73 billion).
Anglo American said it is proposing to sell all of its remaining holding in light of Valterra's share performance since the demerger. Shares in Valterra have risen nearly 77% since the start of the year, and logged nearly half of that gain since the demerger.
The sale will also raise further cash proceeds for Anglo American, strengthening the group's balance sheet, the company said.
"This placing marks further progress in our responsible separation process and a further step in our portfolio simplification to focus on our world-class positions in copper, premium iron ore and crop nutrients," Anglo American Chief Executive Duncan Wanblad said.
