Equinor Shuts 226,000 b/d Mongstad Refinery in Norway After Fire — OPIS
Fire broke out at Equinor's 226,000 b/d Mongstad refinery in Norway on Thursday afternoon local time, according to a company news release.
Equinor said smoke was reported from an electrical kiosk in the refinery at 1 p.m. central European time Thursday, and the fire was extinguished by 3.36 p.m.
The plant was closed and the refiner evacuated non-essential personnel from the site. There were 950 people at the refinery when the incident occurred.
"It is too early to say anything about the cause of the incident," Equinor said in the news release.
Situated to the west of Norway, Mongstad is Equinor's largest refinery.
Meanwhile, Equinor has contracted engineering company Aker Solutions to carry out a feasibility study to identify opportunities to consider the development of a new green-field site, producing blue hydrogen from natural and refinery fuel gas, a carbon capture and export facility, and a plant to produce sustainable aviation fuel from municipal solid waste.
Mongstad emits around 1.7 million metric tons/year of CO2 emissions, according to Aker Solutions data.
