Toyota to Suspend Shipments of 10 Models After Irregular Certification Tests
By David Sachs
Toyota Motor will temporarily suspend shipments of 10 vehicle models after its sister company reported irregular certification tests for diesel engines, it said.
The Japanese automaker said on Monday that a committee in Toyota Industries alerted the company of irregularities surrounding certification testing of three engine models. Horsepower output was measured with different software than is typically used in mass production, resulting in performances that could appear smoother and more consistent, Toyota Motor said.
Toyota Motor said it has verified the products again and that they meet its standards. Still, Toyota Industries will suspend engine shipments, while Toyota Motor will suspend shipments of 10 affected vehicle models, it said.
"Going forward, we will provide detailed explanations to the authorities and promptly proceed with appropriate measures, including conducting testing in the presence of witnesses if appropriate," Toyota Motor said.
The committee that found the irregularities was set up to investigate emission certification irregularities surrounding forklifts and other machinery, Toyota Motor said.
