Geely Automobile and Nio to Collaborate on Battery Swapping Technology

By Sherry Qin

Chinese automaker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group has signed a partnership agreement with electric-vehicle maker Nio to collaborate on battery swapping technology, becoming the second automaker, after Chongqing Changan Automobile, to partner with Nio.

The two companies will collaborate on battery standards, swapping technology and model development for private cars and commercial vehicles, Geely said Wednesday.

Battery swapping allows EV owners to exchange a discharged battery pack for a fully charged one instead of charging the vehicle at a charging station.

The collaboration with Nio will further standardize battery swapping technology, increase the scale of the battery swap network, and accelerate the low-carbon transformation of the automotive industry, Geely said.

Earlier this month, Nio said it would partner with state-owned Changan Automobile to develop battery-swapping electric vehicles.

Nio has previously said it believes battery swapping offers a superior user experience compared with charging and will remain a distinct competitive advantage for the company.
