Maersk Orders Six Container Ships That Can Run on Methanol
By Dominic Chopping
A.P. Moller-Maersk said Monday that it has placed an order with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding for six mid-sized container vessels with dual-fuel engines that are able to operate on green methanol.
The Danish shipping giant said the ships will each have a capacity of 9,000 containers and will be able to operate on both fuel oil and methanol produced using renewable energy.
They will be delivered from 2026, with last delivery in March 2027, and the ships will replace existing capacity in the Maersk fleet.
"With this order, we take another step in the green transformation of our fleet and towards our target of becoming net-zero in 2040," said Maersk's Chief Infrastructure Officer Rabab Boulos.
"As with all our other vessel orders for the last two years, these ships will be able to run on green methanol."
In 2021, Maersk ordered the first methanol-enabled container vessel as part of its commitment to only order new vessels that can sail on green fuels. It now has 25 methanol-enabled vessels on order.
