Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci SP System Gets FDA OK For Some Prostatectomies

By Will Feuer

Intuitive Surgical Inc. said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared its da Vinci SP surgical system for simple prostatectomy, in which a surgeon removes part of an enlarged prostate.

The FDA also cleared the da Vinci SP surgical system for use in transvesical approaches to both simple and radical prostatectomies, the company said. In a radical prostatectomy, the surgeon removes the entire prostate gland, usually for patients who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

"There is a growing body of clinical evidence on the use of the SP system, and we look forward to continuing our efforts to safely advance minimally invasive surgery," Chief Medical Officer Myriam Curet said.

Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci SP system provides surgeons with robotic-assisted technology designed for deep and narrow access to tissue in the body.
