Brazil's Minerva Meatpacker Says China to Resume Beef Imports
By Jeffrey T. Lewis
SÃO PAULO--China's customs agency will allow the unrestricted import of Brazilian beef to resume, Brazilian meatpacker Minerva SA said Thursday.
Minerva said it would restart slaughterhouse activity dedicated to the Chinese market immediately.
Brazilian authorities suspended exports of Brazilian beef to China in February after confirming a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad-cow disease, at a small farm in the state of Pará. The farm was not owned by Minerva.
Brazil is obligated under a bilateral trade agreement to automatically suspend beef exports to China, the biggest buyer of the South American country's beef, if mad-cow disease is detected.
