Baron & Budd and Douglas & London Obtain $7.350 Billion Settlement With 3M Company to Resolve PFAS Personal Injury Lawsuits

The agreement with 3M Company is intended to resolve more than 100,000 personal injury claims related to PFAS exposure.

Today, the nationally recognized law firms Baron & Budd and Douglas & London announce that 3M Company has agreed to pay up to $7.350 billion to PFAS personal injury plaintiffs. The lawsuits allege exposure to 3M’s PFAS products through either drinking water exposure or direct exposure to those that may have handled AFFF at fire suppression facilities. The cases are currently pending in Multi-District Litigation (MDL) 2873 in the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina before Judge Richard Gergel.

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are man-made chemicals that were used in the manufacturing of aqueous film forming foam (AFFF). Airports, military bases and fire training centers used AFFF and trained with AFFF as a firefighting agent to control and extinguish Class B fuel fires.

Baron & Budd shareholder and leader of the firm’s Environmental Litigation Group (ELG), Scott Summy, and Michael London of Douglas & London are the court appointed co-lead counsel in this case. They were the principal architects and negotiators of this PFAS PI Settlement. The settlement is intended to compensate six Eligible Injuries, which include kidney and testicular cancer. This settlement builds on the collective Public Water System settlements already reached in this MDL between 2023 to 2025 that totaled up to $14.751 billion to compensate water systems for their PFAS treatment costs.
