Elite Learning Releases 2026 State of the Nursing Profession Guide, Spotlighting the Voices of More Than 1,100 Nurses

Elite Learning, a division of Colibri Group, today announced the release of its 2026 State of the Nursing Profession Guide. The annual report compiles insights from 1,136 nurses across the country, offering a candid look at the realities, challenges, and opportunities shaping the profession today.

The guide draws on survey responses gathered in July 2026, capturing perspectives on licensure and work settings, salary and compensation satisfaction, workplace challenges, mentorship, and the growing role of artificial intelligence in patient care. Together, these findings paint a picture of a workforce rich in experience and expertise, yet navigating real pressures around staffing, burnout, and career growth.

“The nursing profession stands at an important crossroads,” said Shirley Aycock, DNP, RN, Lead Nurse Planner at Elite Learning. “Workforce shortages, burnout, technological innovation, and shifting care models are touching nurses in every setting. Investing in continuing education is one of the most effective ways nurses can prepare for what’s ahead and unlock new opportunities for growth.”

Among the report’s key findings, 65% of respondents are age 45 or older, signaling a looming knowledge-transfer gap as experienced nurses approach retirement. Despite an average salary of $121,495, only 51% of nurses report satisfaction with their compensation, underscoring that pay alone doesn’t equal feeling valued.

The guide also gives voice to nurses’ candid reflections on the state of their profession:

“I wish we were seen as heroes again.” — Becky M., Survey Respondent

“[I] love my job but [know] I can never get ahead financially while staying at the bedside doing what I love and am good at.” — Jessi N., Survey Respondent

“The joy of nursing and medicine is no longer there... so much more emphasis on financial issues than patient care.” — Ann R., Survey Respondent

Alongside these findings, the guide highlights actionable opportunities for nurses ready to grow their careers, from mentorship and specialty certifications to flexible, self-paced continuing education that fits any schedule. Elite Learning’s CE membership options give nurses accessible tools to build new skills, strengthen career satisfaction, and stay ahead in an evolving industry, all at their own pace.
