New San Diego County Consumer Protection Unit to be Launched With First Three Major Lawsuits Affecting the Online Safety of Children & Ghost Gun Protections

WHAT: After fighting to establish a permanent local consumer-protection office, San Diego County Board Chair Terra Lawson-Remer is announcing the launch of the County’s new Consumer Fairness and Public Protection division and sharing information on its first three lawsuits against companies accused of illegal, deceptive and predatory practices that affect the safety of children and the manufacturing of ghost guns.

Amid gaps in federal consumer protection enforcement, San Diego County is launching a local protection unit so the County can address matters affecting its residents. Consumer Fairness and Public Protection Unit is the first dedicated County unit designed to investigate and pursue civil cases against corporate actors accused of conduct that harms San Diegans. The unit will focus on closing enforcement gaps, protecting residents and securing accountability under California law.
The three lawsuits target:
- Two popular online platforms accused of using technologies that allow predators to target children with sexually explicit materials.
- A manufacturer accused of supplying filaments for ghost guns.
