Metlen joins forces with Thales and Leonardo in Greek space venture
(Alliance News) - Metlen Energy & Metals PLC on Monday said it is working with French and Italian aerospace firms Thales SA and Leonardo Spa for "potential opportunities" in the Greek defence telecommunications space programme.
The Athens-based aluminium producer and electricity generator that also invests in network infrastructure, battery storage, and other green technologies said it is teaming with Thales Alenia Space and Thales Hellas. Thales Alenia Space is 66%-owned by Paris-headquartered Thales SA. Rome-based Leonardo Spa owns the remainder. Thales Hellas is the Greek unit of Thales.
Metlen said the collaboration aims to support Greece's ambition to enhance its "sovereignty, security and strategic autonomy" in space.
"Under the agreement, the partners will establish a framework to assess how their respective expertise and industrial assets could contribute to a future end-to-end defence telecommunications space system," Metlen said in a statement.
The agreement envisages the potential use of Metlen's gallium production capabilities for future Thales Alenia Space-built satellites.
Shares in Metlen were flat at EUR48.76 early Monday morning in London. In Paris, Thales was up 1.2% at EUR221.00. In Milan, Leonardo traded 0.8% higher at EUR47.15.
