How to find the best ETFs

Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) offer a simpler, more accessible way to build a diversified portfolio than traditional mutual funds. But with thousands of options available, choosing the right ETFs requires a thoughtful approach. Morningstar’s data-driven insights and category-based ratings can help you find best-in-class options that fit your needs.

After signing in to Morningstar Investor, use this step-by-step guide to identify high-quality ETFs that align with your goals. Not a subscriber? Take Screener for a spin by starting a 7-day free trial and save $40 on your first year.

Step 1: Navigate to the SCREENER tool and refer to the left-hand toolbar

Step 2: Select ETFS under SECURITY TYPE

Step 3: Select GOLD, SILVER, and BRONZE under MEDALIST RATING (OVERALL)

Why it matters: The Medalist Rating is a forward-looking measure of Morningstar’s confidence in a fund’s ability to outperform its peers, after accounting for fees and risk, through a market cycle. This filter will bring in all funds with a positive Morningstar Medalist Rating.

Analyze the results: After applying these filters, you’ll generate a streamlined list of ETFs with strong forward-looking ratings and the potential to outperform over a full market cycle. Use this as a starting point to compare costs, exposures, and how each fund fits within your broader asset allocation. A disciplined screening approach can help you identify high-quality ETFs that support a diversified, goal-aligned portfolio.
