Super Sector

Super Sectors are a broader representation of Morningstar's 11 equity sectors. They help investors diversify intelligently and evaluate the similarities and differences between securities.

Morningstar consolidates its equity sectors into three Super Sectors based on economic characteristics:

Cyclical: The cyclical Super Sector includes the basic materials, consumer cyclical, financial services, and real estate sectors. In general, the stocks in these sectors and industries have betas greater than 1.
Defensive: The defensive Super Sector includes the consumer defensive, healthcare, and utilities sectors. In general, the stocks in these sectors and industries have betas of less than 1 due to their relative immunity to economic cycles.
Sensitive: The sensitive Super Sector includes the communications, energy, industrials, and technology sectors. In general, the stocks in these sectors and industries have betas close to 1.

Our investment management business generates asset-based fees, which are calculated as a percentage of assets under management. We also sell both admissions and sponsorship packages for our investment conferences and advertising on our websites and newsletters.
