Socially Responsible Investing

What is socially responsible investing?

Socially responsible investing, sometimes shortened to responsible investing, is the forerunner of what today is more often called sustainable investing. Socially responsible investing is associated with values-based investing, or the notion of aligning values with investments. Developed in the 1980s, socially responsible investing did not have the benefit of environmental, social, and governance data, which was in its infancy, and instead relied on exclusions and active ownership (direct engagement and proxy voting).
