Delivering Climate Data Resources
Read Time: 1 Minute
Companies, investors, regulators, policymakers, and the public need a trusted, central source of verifiable data to track and understand carbon emissions and assess progress against climate commitments.
For the general public and individual investors, important climate data on emissions is difficult to access; it is rarely standardized; is seldom formatted for widespread public consumption.
To address this challenge, French President Emmanuel Macron and Michael Bloomberg formed the Climate Data Steering Committee on June 3, 2022. The Committee is an international affiliation of data service providers (including Morningstar), non-governmental organizations, policymakers, and regulators. The group is chaired by Mary Schapiro and seeks to make the most important climate data accessible and transparent for everyone.
Morningstar is an active member of the Committee; our support reflects our mission to empower investor success by delivering accessible, transparent data, research, and tools to individuals and investors of all types.
On September 21, the group released recommendations for the development of a public, open data platform—the Net Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU). The recommendations acknowledge the importance of mandatory disclosure rules and propose an approach to enhancing transparency and accessibility for all audiences.
“This is an urgent opportunity to democratize access to the climate data that investors deserve. Open, accessible data is critical so each of us can examine long-term material risks and achieve success on our terms,” said Kunal Kapoor, CEO, Morningstar, Inc.
The organization’s first publication, a white paper setting out the challenge and proposal for its solution, is here.
Morningstar strives to provide transparent, accessible data to investors of all kinds. We are excited to join this work to make climate data accessible to all.
