Stock Analyst Note

Tsingtao Brewery’s 2024 net profit slightly exceeded our expectations due mainly to higher nonoperating income. Although gross margin was stronger than anticipated, operating profit fell short of our forecast by 3% because of lower revenue and increased operating expenses. We believe the company raised its selling expenditures toward the end of 2024 to reduce channel inventory.
Stock Analyst Note

We maintain our 2024 earnings forecasts for both narrow-moat Budweiser APAC and Tsingtao Brewery ahead of results announcements, as we have already factored in the challenging fourth quarter given seasonality and headwinds in the on-trade channels. Our fair value estimates remain intact at HKD 17 per share for Budweiser APAC and HKD 71 per share (CNY 65 per A-share) for Tsingtao Brewery. We reiterate our view that the short-term headwinds do not impair the long-term competitive advantages of the companies, which lie in their distribution strength. We continue to prefer Budweiser APAC, given its ability to monetize the digitalization of the distribution channel and the strong premium beer portfolio that could benefit from the long-term premiumization trend in China’s beer market.

Stock Analyst Note

Narrow-moat Tsingtao Brewery's third-quarter 2024 revenue and net income trailed our estimates, mainly dragged by weak sales volume trend. Operating expenses ratio also increased, which further pressured net margin. We cut our 2024-28 revenue and net income estimates by 5%-7% due to lower sales volume assumptions, but our margins outlook remains unchanged. As a result, we reduce our fair value estimate to HKD 71 per H-share (CNY 65 per A-share) from HKD 73 (CNY 67). Our top pick in the sector remains Budweiser APAC, due to its stronger prospects in monetizing the long-term beer premiumization trend in China.
