Itaú Unibanco Is in a Strong Position Despite Stubborn Inflation

Business Strategy and Outlook

The challenge for Itaú Unibanco will be to navigate a volatile Brazilian economy and uncertain political environment, which is still working through issues with inflation. The Brazilian central bank made initial progress in its fight against inflation in 2023 and early 2024, allowing it to lower interest rates from their peak of 13.75%. However, in recent months, inflation has begun to climb again, forcing the central bank to reverse course bring rates to a new high of 14.75% in May 2025, increasing macroeconomic risks for the bank. Adding to the problems, concerns have risen surrounding Brazil's significant budget deficit, with the government struggling to meet its fiscal rules, further adding to inflationary pressure and market uncertainty.
