PCA Earnings: Price Increases Drive Growth, but Tariff Uncertainty Raises Concerns
No-moat-rated Packaging Corp. of America reported first-quarter results that were slightly ahead of our expectations as the company drove price increases despite a challenging operating environment. PCA continued to experience solid demand for its corrugated packaging products, which drove a roughly 8% year-over-year increase in consolidated sales. End-market demand has remained relatively resilient, and PCA’s ability to raise prices for its packaging products continues to impress. Nevertheless, the threat of tariffs looms as a potential slowdown in consumer spending could have a significant impact on packaging demand. We think near-term demand headwinds will be offset by price increases, but longer-term economic uncertainty could have an adverse effect on PCA. We've raised our fair value estimate to $147 per share from $144 due to the time value of money.
