Perpetual is a well-run organization with a clear focus on investor outcomes. Perpetual effectively operates a “house of boutiques” business model, providing its underlying affiliates with the autonomy to operate independently while leveraging the strength of the group’s distribution, operations, risk, and compliance capabilities. As of December 2025, total assets under management were approximately AUD 228 billion across six affiliates(Perpetual, Barrow Hanley, Pendal, J O Hambro, TSW, and Trillium), spanning domestic and global equities, fixed income, multi-asset, and cash products. Equity offerings across global, the US, Australia, emerging, the UK, and European markets currently make up around 80% of total group assets, though the long-term plan is to diversify its asset mix to reduce its exposure to equity market cycles and enhance financial stability. While each business maintains its own leadership team, Bernard Reilly leads the group and was appointed as the CEO and managing director in September 2024. Crucially, Reilly has shown clear commitment to the investment personnel in the underlying firms and their long-term success, which should support investment team stability, boutique performance, and, in turn, investor outcomes. This is a notable distinction from some other local publicly listed asset managers that previously used investment staff as a source of cost savings, which undoubtedly affected firm culture and client outcomes. That said, Perpetual’s current cost-out program remains an active watchpoint, with ongoing scrutiny to ensure investment resources, especially key personnel, are not adversely affected. Investor alignment is achieved through multiple mechanisms, including remuneration linked to long-term strategy performance, deferred co-investment or participation in Perpetual stock funded through bonuses, and a share of performance fees for certain products, alongside an initiative to introduce a profit-share arrangement across the affiliates.
