European Markets Slightly Higher

European markets were slightly higher Monday.

The FTSE was edged up 0.1%. The CAC 40 Paris also edged up 0.1% while the German DAX was up 0.3%.

Data earlier showed retail sales in Germany slowed unexpectedly in May to 1.9% over the last year and below expectations calling for a gain of 2.1%. Month on month, sales were down by 0.6%, lower than expectations calling for a 0.7% rise.

Inflation data is due slightly later from the euro-zone.

Stocks on the Move

Anglo American PLC edged up 0.1% even as the Sunday Times reported the miner has put its platinum mines in South Africa up for sale.

Philips gained 3.2% in Amsterdam after it said it would merge its Lumileds LED components and automotive lighting divisions into a standalone subsidiary which could be potentially spun off.

In Denmark, Vestas Wind Systems surged over 5% after it said it had won two large orders from the U.S.

BNP Paribas edged up 0.3% even as reports said the U.S. Justice Department is expected to announce a settlement with the lender later today involving a record fine of nearly $9 billion.
