The Short Answer

Keeping an Eye on the Insiders

Insider-transaction data can signal optimism or pessimism among company leadership, but investors must use the numbers wisely.

Question: Before buying or selling a stock, I like to know whether company insiders have recently done the same--or the opposite--as I plan to do. How can I check this on Morningstar.com?

Answer: Each stock page on Morningstar.com includes an Insiders tab with information about company leadership. Within this tab is a section called Insider Activity that reports buying and selling of company stock by company executives and other insiders.
