Europe: Stocks Turn Lower

Shares in Europe turned lower Tuesday, as French banks, which had gained early on a broker upgrade, gave up gains but miners continued to hold on to the green.

At 4.30 p.m. (I.S.T.), Britain's FTSE, France's CAC and Germany's DAX declined 0.3% to 0.7%.

French banks, which started traded firmly in the green, turned lower with BNP Paribas, Credit Agricole and Societe Generale losing 0.4% to 1.3%.

Automakers also gave up early gains and were trading between 0.4% and 0.8% lower.

But miners bucked the broader trend and held on to gains: BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Xstrata advanced between 0.4% and 0.9%.
