Company Report

Carrefour’s Effective Implementation of Its Strategic Plan Has Led To a Successful Turnaround

Carrefour provides exposure to global food retail with a high European weighting, mostly in the mature and competitive western part of the continent: France, Spain, Italy, and Belgium. However, it is highly exposed to the large hypermarket format, which is in structural decline in mature markets. This is because of consumer behaviour shifts and demographic trends (less waste, lower family formation rates, smaller families), which have contributed to the structural growth of convenience over one-stop shops, with shoppers preferring more frequent shopping trips and smaller baskets.

Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls

Consolidation of the group’s European purchasing operations, gives Carrefour ample leeway to address its less competitive price position in France.

Bears

Carrefour has a poor price position in France, several percentage points more expensive than its better-positioned French rival, Leclerc.

Company Profile

Carrefour is a multiformat retailer with operations in more than 30 countries, with tens of thousands of shops globally, over 1,000 drive-thru locations, and about 340,000 employees. Although hypermarkets still account for the bulk of sales in France, the company, founded in 1959, is expanding away from its initial large hypermarket style. Due to its emphasis on creating smaller stores, its exposure to the nonfood sector has decreased. Approximately 73% of sales are generated in Europe, and the rest in Latin America (27%).
