Lagging Indicators

Economic indicators that lag behind the overall pace of the economy.

For example, the retail sales market indicator may show an upward trend while other economic indicators are experiencing a downward trend. Lagging indicators include such things as the unemployment rate, business spending for new plants and equipment, and the value of manufacturing and trade inventories.

In the case of retail stores, even though sales may have slowed, the business cannot refuse the supplies ordered prior to a downturn. Lagging indicators can confirm or deny the trend shown by the leading indicators.
